Time's Incinerator Review

A cassette-only release, this is a collection of outtakes and live tracks covering the period from 1981-1986 when the band was metamorphosing from their former selves as Loud Fast Rules into Soul Asylum. Obviously, when you give your band a name like Loud Fast Rules, you're not going to be playing folk-rock, but despite the insistence on speed and volume, there are some surprises here, most notably a live cover of James Brown's "Hot Pants." An interesting document of a band growing up and becoming more comfortable with getting better, whether they wanted to or not. ~ John Dougan, All Music Guide
