Love Songs Review

The Turtles' Love Songs collection is a short (ten songs) collection of hits and some other songs that show the softer side of the band. Kicking off a collection with "Happy Together" is always a good idea even if a close inspection of the lyrics shows it to be not as happy as it seems. "Elenore" is another fine song even if it is a sarcastic response by the band to its label's pleas for another "Happy Together." On the surface both songs are happy love songs, and that is all that really matters, one supposes. The rest of the disc has some Turtles classics like "You Don't Have to Walk in the Rain," "You Showed Me," "Me About You," and "Love in the City," and some lesser tunes like "Lady-O," "Is It Any Wonder," and "So It Goes." The casual listener who just wants some familiar Turtles songs will be fairly satisfied by Love Songs, while anyone who really wants to find out what the Turtles were all about should head directly to Rhino's superb 2003 collection Solid Zinc: The Turtles Anthology. ~ Tim Sendra, All Music Guide
