Back 2 Back Hits Review

07/13/2005 7:23 AM, AMG

MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice are a great pairing for a Back 2 Back Hits disc. Both artists were the personification of pop-rap in the late '80s/early '90s, and they unexpectedly became million-selling artists on the strength of just a handful of singles. MC Hammer's five songs do an excellent job of gathering his best material, as all of his biggest hits -- "U Can't Touch This," "Addams Groove," "2 Legit 2 Quit," "Pray," "Have You Seen Her" -- are included. Vanilla Ice's half, on the other hand, is imperfect, to say the least. "Ice Ice Baby" is here, of course, as is his minor final single, "Cool As Ice (Everybody Get Loose)," which featured Naomi Campbell. However, "Play That Funky Music" and "I Love You" are taken from his lame live album, not To the Extreme, which is where the original hit versions are. That alone makes the value of his five songs negligible, but the Hammer section is so good, this disc is still recommended to budget-minded pop-rap fans. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
