Unfinished Business: Dave Davies... Review
08/05/2007 6:31 AM, AMG
This two-CD set compiles the other Davies brother's contributions to the Kinks as well as his own solo works. From the earliest Kinks recording, "I Believed You," penned by Dave, to his groundbreaking guitar work on "You Really Got Me"; memorable vocal takes on "Long Tall Shorty," "C'mon Now" and "Milkcow Blues"; some less spectacular vocal turns and on through to the many songs Davies wrote and made famous for the band ("Wait Till the Summer Comes Along," "Trust Your Heart"), it's clear that melodically, Dave was his brother's equal. The title song Davies penned with the intention of recording as a Kink tune sounds absolutely contemporary -- Dave's no dinosaur. And there are plenty of rarities -- demos, new versions and unheard music. This is the definition of a class reissue, bittersweet in its sheer existence, but no less a huge victory. ~ Denise Sullivan, All Music Guide
