The Doors Review

Single-disc overviews are notoriously difficult to assemble if one is trying to be truly representative of a band's best -- and usually most popular -- work. Temptation abounds as to what side of the coin to err on: the hits versus artistic merit. Fortunately, this compilation succeeds on both counts. These tracks are the signposts of who the Doors were as a recording entity. The singles are usually great signposts to the inner workings of an album, and seven of these tracks have been radio staples for decades. The decision to include the full version of "The End" is a wise one as well, offering a solid portrait of the band's most infamous recorded moment as well as a glimpse of its adventurous improvisational style. For those who seek one hit-packed disc, this is it. For those who will miss the inclusion "When the Music's Over," there's always the double-CD set. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
