Another Journal Entry is what’s known as calling a spade a spade, as accuracy in reporting and correctly labeling your product. For one doesn’t have to listen long to Chicago’s BarlowGirl’s second album for very long before figuring out that these are the sincere, honest expressions of three young ladies dedicated to the Contemporary Christian Rock movement. These songs of emotional uplift, meant to deliver us from temptation and give young people a constructive outlet for their adolescent angst and struggle, are whipped tight in either a shiny pop sheen or the gentler confines of acoustic pop-folk that centers on the seamless harmonies of sisters Becca, Alyssa and Lauren Barlow. And they do have the sound of journal entries, resounding with themes of identity questioned and resolved by their faith. They’ve included a piano-based, acoustic version of “Never Alone,” the song from their debut album that earned them GMA (Gospel Music Association) nominations for Best New Band and Best Rock Song.
