Goodbye Blue Monday

With over two million views on YouTube of his $60 homemade video for "Cigarette," Vancouver-based singer-songwriter Jeremy Fisher is the sort of bizarre success story we're all anxiously trying to claim for our own. It's as if Fisher had a way with securing the winning numbers for tomorrow's lottery and determinedly worked it into song. Though he isn't afraid to use the full arsenal of the recording studio, Fisher's at home within the confines of the simpler structures of acoustic guitar and harmonica ("Jolene") and the small band format where it feels as if he's sitting right there in the room. He'll draw the inevitable comparisons to Bob Dylan (the title track), since his voice retains a touch of sandpaper and his curly hair remains wild and free, but the propulsive purr and unpretentious vibe driving "Lay Down" and "High School" should draw references to Nick Lowe and '70s New Wave in general.
