Dixie Chicks' One-Day Ticket Sales Make History

(3/6/03, 7 a.m. ET) -- The Dixie Chicks made music history yet again when they sold more than 867,000 concert tickets in one day. Tickets to 59 of their Lipton Presents Dixie Chicks Top Of The World tour dates went on sale through Ticketmaster on Saturday (March 1). At day's end, 51 of the arena shows were already sold out, with few tickets left at the remaining eight shows, and totaling more than $49 million in sales. In doing so, the Dixie Chicks surpassed sales records set previously by Madonna, U2, the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, the Backstreet Boys, and *NSYNC.
The award-winning trio opted to perform their new shows in arenas as opposed to outdoor venues for one simple reason. Emily Robison and Natalie Maines explained why.
"Sound, basically," Robison said. "You know, when you go and you talk to your technical people and they say your people on the lawn aren't gonna get the ultimate sound than the people under the shed..."
Maines interjected, "And like 60 percent of the people are on the lawn."
"It is a big number, so to us, because it is acoustic music, we want the best sound possible," Robison added.
The Dixie Chicks also had control issues and the fans in mind when making their final decision, according to Maines. "We also like to put on a really grandiose show, and I think when you're in a controlled environment and indoors, the lights speak a lot more and the sets do as well," Maines said. "You know, we thought about the fans, too. There's a few more fees and things on tickets for sheds."
The North American leg of the Lipton Presents Dixie Chicks Top Of The World tour kicks off May 1 in Greenville, South Carolina. The Chicks will head overseas to begin the international leg on September 6 in Stockholm.
