Shakira Sweeps Latin American VMAs

(10/25/02, 5 p.m. ET) - Colombian singer Shakira was the big winner at the inaugural MTV Video Music Awards Latin America (VMALA) on Thursday (October 24), taking home the award in each of the five categories in which she was nominated. Shakira won artist of the year, video of the year, female artist of the year, pop artist, and best artist (north). Chilean rockers La Ley picked up two awards for group or duo and for rock artist.
Other VMALA winners included: Pink, who took home an award for international pop artist; Red Hot Chili Peppers, who won for international rock artist; and Avril Lavigne, who was named best international new artist.
Colombian singer Juanes grabbed the male artist of the year award, while Diego Torres won for best artist (southeast) and Manu Chao was honored with the award for alternative artist of the year. Sin Bandera won new artist (north) and Libido took best artist (southwest).
Highlights of the 2002 VMALAs included legendary guitarist Carlos Santana's performance of "The Game Of Love" with Michelle Branch, and Avril Lavigne's performance of her hit single, "Complicated." Shakira offered hip-shaking rendition of "Inevitable," while Mana sang "Angel De Amor" and System of a Down performed "Chop Suey." The Rolling Stones opened the show, while Kinky and Paulina Rubio closed out the evening with their version of Kiss's "I Was Made For Loving You."
The awards ceremony honoring the best Latin music videos was hosted by Argentine television and radio personality Mario Pergolini and Mexican actor Diego Luna. The show took place at the Jackie Gleason Theatre in Miami Beach, Florida.
