Orrico said that teenagers nowadays just don't have the role models in their lives to show them what a healthy relationship looks like. "It just can be really hard because girls--you know a lot of girls don't have a healthy relationship in their world to look to, to know this is what I'm supposed to be treated like...," Orrico said. "And the guys--they don't have their father around or whatever, so they don't know how they're supposed to treat a lady, and so relationships within the teen world end up being kind of messed up."
Orrico added that "Stuck" is literally about a girl being stuck in a relationship, and being afraid to leave for any number of reasons. "I wrote it with this guy named Kevin Kadish and we were sitting talking about girls my age and in relationships how sometimes it's really difficult," Orrico explained. "And even as a 17-year-old, you can end up in relationships where you're really kind of emotionally attached. They end up, you know, kind of in this tug-of-war of like, 'Okay, I know I should probably get out of this relationship because it's not healthy but I'm afraid of being alone,' and how you end up emotionally 'stuck.'"
Kadish also penned "Dumb Girls" for Atlantic Records newcomer Lucy Woodward.
Orrico will appear on American Dreams on Sunday (May 18) at 8 p.m. ET on NBC. Orrico portrays Peggy Santiglia, the lead singer of the real-life '60s girl group the Angels. And she will be performing the group's hit single, "My Boyfriend's Back."
Orrico said her next single will likely be "(There's Gotta Be) More to Life."
