When Portland, Ore.'s Simon Tam decided to start a band, he had more than just music on his mind. Tam, who is Asian-American and interested in race issues, chose a name for the outfit that deliberately addressed Asian stereotypes -- the Slants. Aside from the obvious implication (we're sure you can figure it out), Tam and his bandmates liked the name for its "fun, New Wave" feel, as well as the play on words: Everyone has their own "slant" on life.
America's teens and tweens have spoken. One Direction's Midnight Memories enters The Billboard 200 at #1, enabling the English/Irish quintet to become the first boy band in chart history to land three #1 albums. Four earlier boy bands—New Kids On The Block, Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC and Jonas Brothers—each had two #1 albums. Midnight Memories sold
When we travel back to the jovial year of 1968 when we had average happenings such as assassinations, riots and the election of President Richard Nixon, a man whose reputation got so bad that Neil Young had to defend him, we just wonder how excited people were to reach New Year’s Eve! It’s a mighty

The 20/20 Experience: The Complete Experience is almost certain to be nominated for both Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album. You can blame it on the Beatles. Sure, they were one of — if not the — most successful bands ever, and they also proved — at least initially — they could find success as solo artists. Within a few years of their breakup in 1970, three-quarters of the band produced No. 1 albums (Paul McCartney's McCartney, George Harrison's All Things Must Pass, and John Lennon's Imagine). Even Ringo Starr scored a No. 2 album with 1973's Ringo. Other artists going solo from successful bands haven't been as lucky.

Music lovers (and especially country music lovers) received an early Christmas treat in the form of the new holiday movie Angels Sing, which went into limited release last month and wowed with a fantastic cast including Harry Connick Jr., "Nashville's" Connie Britton, Lyle Lovett, and not one but two country legends: Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson.
Frank Zappa put a subversive face on tricky jazz-rock fusion, collaborated with the L.A. Philharmonic and London Symphony Orchestra, and worked with classical figures from Zubin Mehta to Pierre Boulez... Bitchin', right? Twenty years on from his death, Zappa might roll over and gag himself with a spoon in his grave if he were to
Bob Dylan made a name for himself by writing protest songs and Civil Rights anthems. Now he's being sued by a Croatian community organization for allegedly making comments that they believe incite racial hatred. Huh? Sure, Dylan has always been outspoken about politics, but inciting racial hatred? That just doesn't sound like the Dylan we
Justin Timberlake's The 20/20 Experience has been the frontrunner to win the Grammy for Album of the Year virtually since the week it was released in March. With the nominations set to be announced on Friday, it's still the album to beat. Lorde's "Royals" is the leading candidate for Record of the Year, with Imagine
Lady Gaga has become famous for her chameleon-like ability to change from a platinum vixen to a bizarre brunette bombshell, literally overnight. The pop star's most shocking move lately? Posting a photo and video of herself without any elaborate wigs and hardly any makeup, looking virtually unrecognizable. The "Applause" singer posted a selfie on Instagram [...]
"American Idol" Season 9 runner-up Crystal Bowersox recently shocked longtime fans when she tweeted a photo of herself sans the famous dreadlocks she wore for more than seven years, rocking a modest shoulder-length 'do instead. Tamar actually made our list of the highlights for the show that also boasted many
It's been 30 years since Michael Jackson's "Thriller" first hit the airwaves, forever changing our expectations of what a music video could be. It cost a record-setting $500,000, sold more than 9 million units (yes, people used to actually buy music videos), and won big at both the Grammys and MTV Video Music Awards. [...]
Garth Brooks undoubtedly has a lot to be thankful for this holiday season — not the least of which is a new deluxe boxed set, Blame It All On My Roots, which hit stores this week . However, during an appearance on the "Ellen Degeneres Show" Friday, the country icon saved his most grateful words
