Awesome But Misinformed Rapper Says ‘Detox’ Finally Being Mixed

We've all heard the Detox talk before. For the past four years or so, Dr. Dre's comeback album has been rumored to be on the precipice of arriving, only to fall completely off the release schedule. It was last supposed to come out on April 20th, but that didn't happen. Singles like "Syllables," "Kush," and "Die Hard" have come and gone, but still no Detox. However, Compton's best emerging rapper Kendrick Lamar, who was recruited by the Doctor to work on Detox, told Sway in the Morning that the album is nearing the finish line (via Nah Right).

"Detox is getting mixed. That's all I can say. It's getting mixed," Lamar said after shooting down rumors that "mastered" copies of Dre's Chinese Democracy were handed out at K. Dot's recent Los Angeles gig. (K.Dot's his nickname, catch up.) Lamar, well aware of Detox's notoriety, admitted that, "I can say anything I want about Detox, nobody would believe it." The rapper revealed he contributed a few songs to Detox but he's unclear how many will stick, because "the creative process is so crazy... there's thousands of songs" for Dre to choose from. That's believable, since Dre's been working on this since 2002. However, considering Lamar is still clueless whether his songs made the final track list, Detox might still be in the distant future.

As for Lamar's latest album Section.80, if you haven't heard this LP yet, do so ASAP. The disc is this half of The Amp's vote for Best Rap Album of 2011, and this year has been a decent one for hip-hop so far -- Watch the Throne, Curren$y's Covert Coup, Beastie Boys' Hot Sauce Committee Part Two, etc. Lamar's blend of smart rhymes about growing up in Compton combined with next-generation beats makes the 24-year-old one of the most promising rappers out there. (Sway has audio of Snoop Dogg "passing the torch" to Lamar. That's quite an endorsement.)

Here's a small sampling of Lamar's skills, courtesy of the freestyle he delivered live on Sway's show:
