Jared Leto Audition Tape Becomes Infuriating Kurt Cobain Tribute

Jared Leto and Kurt Cobain look a lot alike. It's no secret; people have made comparisons between the Nirvana singer and the 30 Seconds to Mars frontman ever since Leto was messing with Claire Danes' heart on My So-Called Life. However, to commemorate Cobain on the 17th anniversary of his death, Leto took their likeness a step too far by revealing an audition tape where he actually portrays Cobain, long blond hair, cardigan, and all. Leto even flips his guitar from right-handed (as he plays in 30 Seconds to Mars) to left-handed like Cobain as he performs an uncomfortable version of Nirvana's "Pennyroyal Tea." We're not sure if this is a touching or creepy tribute, but we're leaning toward the latter.

"I heard today (5 April) was the day Kurt passed away 17 years ago," Leto wrote on his site. "I can't believe it's been that long. I'm so grateful for his contribution and inspiration. I'm not sure I'd be doing this if it weren't for him. He gave us all permission to create, no matter what our skill set, and reminded me that dreams are possible. This made me recall a short piece of film I shot when I heard they were making a film celebrating his life. I made it to explore the character and explore creative possibilities. I never sent it to the studio or to anyone but thought I'd share it now."

It's unclear if this was Leto's audition tape for Gus Van Zant's Cobain-inspired Last Days (Michael Pitt ended up in the Kurt-esque role) or for the Cobain biopic that Courtney Love has been threatening fans with for years (though Love prefers Ryan Gosling or James McAvoy to play her husband). Either way, we wish Leto kept this tape to himself.
