Listen to Damon Albarn’s Cool Congo Project

View photo

Damon Albarn is easily the most prolific dude in rock between Blur, Gorillaz, the Good the Bad and the Queen, his strange Monkey opera, his stranger John Dee opera, and a handful of other projects that seem to pop up at any moment. Earlier this year, Albarn, who routinely experiments with world music, and a few producer friends voyaged to the Congo for five days to record with top African musicians for an Oxfam benefit album. The result is DRC Music (for Democratic Republic of Congo) and a new album called Kinshasa One Two, due out digitally October 3rd.

DRC Music posted three tracks from the project over at Soundcloud, and they're impressive: Each one finds African music seamlessly combined with genres like dubstep, dream-pop, and trance, like an ultra-remixed version of Talking Heads' Remain in Light. The results also prove there isn't a genre on the planet Albarn can't master. Check out the songs below, and head to the DRC Music site to pre-order.

"Hallo" (featuring Tout Puissant Mukalo and Nelly Liyemge)

"Ah Congo" (featuring Jupiter Bokondji and Bokatola System)

"Lingala" (featuring Bokatola System and Evala Litongo)
