No Mansion on the Horizon: Malibu Rejects Edge’s Dream Home

Now that the Edge and U2 are officially part of the richest musical act on the planet, all the guitarist wanted to do with his wealth was construct a massive 158-acre, five-mansion household atop a seaside enclave in scenic Malibu, California. Seems reasonable, but unfortunately the Edge was denied permission to build his personal Xanadu by the California Coastal Commission, who rejected the project by a vote of 8-4. The vote would've been 7-5, but one member of the Commission was thoroughly unimpressed with No Line on the Horizon, as well as the amount of native vegetation that would've been destroyed by the Edge's palace, Reuters reports.

Not only was the Edge's bid denied, his reputation as an environmentalist -- uh, he's still considered an environmentalist after the 360° Tour's insane carbon footprint? -- was called into question. "In 38 years of this commission's existence, this is one of the three worst projects that I've seen in terms of environmental devastation," Peter Douglas, the agency's executive director, told the Los Angeles Times. "It's a contradiction in terms -- you can't be serious about being an environmentalist and pick this location." Hmm, "this is one of the three worst projects that I've seen in terms of environmental devastation," that's also what critics said about what happened to Broadway after Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark opened, right? (Boom, roasted.)

The Edge promised to make his mansions -- which would only occupy one acre of the 158-acre property -- environmentally sustainable with solar panels, electric vehicles, and a rainwater catchment system. That wasn't enough to convince the Commission to vote his way as Malibu residents also expressed concern that the Edge's mega-complex would obstruct their views of the Pacific Ocean. The Edge bought this property back in 2005 for the sole purpose of building the best MTV Cribs segment ever, so he and his legal team are weighing a lawsuit to revive the project.
