Rihanna Not Making Any Lyrical Strides on New Single

Rihanna, who is swiftly becoming music's most prolific pop star, will release her new song "We Found Love" tomorrow. It's the first single from her sixth album, her third LP in as many years, following 2009's Rated R and 2010's Loud. No one churns out discs this consistently anymore -- it's like when Bob Dylan released Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, and Blonde on Blonde in the span of 14 months. While rock's poet laureate made great lyrical strides over the course of those three albums, we can't say the same about Rihanna.

According to Rihanna's Facebook page, these are the "We Found Love" lyrics. While it's unclear whether Rihanna penned these lines -- she just showed up and sang other writers' words on Loud -- six albums into her career, it's about time she sharpened her lyrical filter:

"Yellow diamonds in the light
And we're standing side by side
As your shadow crosses mine
What it takes to come alive

It's the way I'm feeling I just can't deny
But I've gotta let it go

We found love in a hopeless place (4x)

Shine a light through an open door
Love and life I will divide
Turn away cause I need you more
Feel the heartbeat in my mind

It's the way I'm feeling I just can't deny
But I've gotta let it go

We found love in a hopeless place (4x)"

That's vacuous even by pop music standards. No wonder she's pumping out music so quickly. Those lyrics took like what, seven minutes to write? If that's Rihanna's work, maybe she scribbled them on the back of her script between Battleship takes. If another songwriter is responsible for those, they should be ashamed of themselves. Knowing Rihanna though, "We Found Love" will probably be an instant Hot 100 chart-topper and on The Amp's iPod gym mix regardless.

Plus, it has to be better than the last time an artist "found love," right?
