Week Ending July 8, 2012. Songs: Jepsen’s Digital Record

Carly Rae Jepsen's

"Call Me Maybe" has sold 4,310,000 copies, and it's still #1 on both the Hot 100 (for the fifth week) and Hot Digital Songs (for the eighth week). This is the first time that a song has rung up such a massive sales tally while it was still #1 on the digital sales chart. "Somebody That I Used To Know" by Gotye featuring Kimbra was the first song in digital history to have sold 4 million copies while it was still on top of the digital sales chart. It had sold 4,042,000 copies as of its final week at #1.

"Somebody…" is already up to #14 on Nielsen SoundScan's running list of the best-selling digital hits of all time. "Call Me Maybe" is #51 on that list. But the impressive records they have set suggests that they will wind up very near the top of the list.

"Low" by Flo Rida featuring T-Pain was the first song to top the 3 million mark while it was still #1 on Hot Digital Songs. Four other songs achieved the feat before "Somebody…" went one better and hit the 4 million mark while it was still #1. Those others: Ke$ha's "TiK ToK," Adele's "Rolling In The Deep," LMFAO's "Sexy And I Know It," and "We Are Young" by fun. featuring Janelle Monae.

"Call Me Maybe" is the first song to rank #1 on Hot Digital Songs for eight weeks (consecutive or not) since the Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling" wound up a 10-week run at #1 in September 2009. It pushes ahead of a trio of more recent collabo hits that had seven weeks on top: "Love The Way You Lie" by Eminem featuring Rihanna, "E.T." by Katy Perry featuring Kanye West; and the aforementioned "We Are Young."

"Good Time," Jepsen's collabo with Owl City, jumps from #18 to #17 in its second week. Digital sales rank: #8 (127K).

"Payphone" by Maroon 5 featuring Wiz Khalifa holds at #2 on the Hot 100 for the fourth week. That's the longest run at #2 by a song that hasn't (yet) advanced to #1 since Cee Lo Green's "F**k You (Forget You)" had four weeks at #2 in March 2011. "Payphone" advances to #5 on the year-to-date chart, exchanging places with Nicki Minaj's "Starships." "Payphone" also returns to #1 (for a second week) in the U.K. It was dethroned last week by "This Is Love" by will.i.am featuring Eva Simons.

Ellie Goulding's "Lights" jumps from #6 to #5 in its 29th week. That's the longest that any single has taken to reach the top five since Lonestar's "Amazed" hit the top five in its 30th chart week in February 2000. That sleeper smash was a big hit in multiple formats. It topped the country chart for eight weeks and the pop chart for two weeks. It also spent five weeks at #2 on the adult contemporary chart.

Nicki Minaj's

"Starships" dips from #8 to #9 in its 21st week. It has been in the top 10 the entire time. Billboard's Gary Trust reports that it's the first song to spend its first 21 weeks in the top 10 in the history of the Hot 100. It surpasses the Black Eyed Peas' aforementioned 2009 smash "I Gotta Feeling," which spent its first 20 weeks in the top 10. (Not to take anything away from Minaj's achievement, but few songs debuted in the top 10 prior to 1995, so they couldn't have achieved this feat. Between the creation of the Hot 100 in August 1958 and June 1995, just three songs debuted in the top 10. All three were by the Beatles: "Hey Jude," "Get Back" and "Let It Be.")

Here's the low-down on this week's top 10 songs.

The song returns to #1 on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs after being displaced last week by Usher's "Climax." This is the second week on top for "Mercy."

Neon Trees

lands its second top 20 hit as "Everybody Talks" jumps from #21 to #18 in its 17th week. "Animal" reached #13 in November 2010. Neon Trees is officially the most successful "Neon" act in history. The Neon Philharmonic had one top 20 hit, 1969's memorable "Morning Girl." "Everybody Talks" tops the 1 million mark in digital sales this week….Demi Lovato lands her fourth top 20 hit as "Give Your Heart A Break" jumps from #22 to #19 in its 14th week. The song peaked at #49. The song jumps to #1 on this week's Hot Country Songs chart. It's Gilbert's second #1 country hit, following "Country Must Be Country Wide."

P!nk's

"Blow Me (One Last Kiss)" debuts at #58. It's from P!nk's sixth studio album The Truth About Love, which is due Sept. 18. This is the first time the colorful phrase "blow me" has appeared on the Hot 100, though P!nk's parenthetical addition to the title softens it. P!nk has a history of edgy titles, including "U + Ur Hand" and "F**kin' Perfect."

Tim McGraw's "Truck Yeah" debuts at #69. The edgy title echoes Sugarland's 2009 hit "It Happens," which reached #1 on Hot Country Songs and #33 on the Hot 100. This proves that country artists (and fans) have a colorful vocabulary (and a sense of humor)…Zac Brown Band's "The Wind" jumps from #99 to #72 in its second week. The band's album Uncaged is expected to enter The Billboard 200 at #1 next week with first-week sales in the 210K range.

"I Wish You Would" by DJ Khaled featuring Kanye West & Rick Ross bows at #78. It's from DJ Khaled's sixth studio album Kiss The Ring, which is due Aug. 21…"Bag Of Money" by Wale featuring Rick Ross, Meek Mill & T-Pain jumps from #93 to #81 in its second week…Chris Brown's "Don't Wake Me Up" re-enters the chart at #88. Brown's album Fortune entered The Billboard 200 at #1 this week, though the sales tally was just half of the tally for his 2011 album F.A.M.E...Matchbox Twenty's "She's So Mean" re-enters the chart at #90.

"2 Reasons" by Trey Songz featuring T.I. debuts at #97. It's from Songz's fifth album Chapter V, which is due Aug. 21…"Get It Started" by Pitbull featuring Shakira debuts at #99. This is from Pitbull's seventh studio album Global Warming, which is due later this year.

Adele's

"Set Fire To The Rain" tops the 4 million mark in digital sales this week. It's the third song from 21 to reach or exceed this level. "Rolling In The Deep" stands at 7,307,000. "Someone Like You" has sold 5,086,000. Will "Set Fire" reach 5 million? Place your bets.

"Wild Ones" by Flo Rida featuring Sia tops the 3 million mark in digital sales this week. It's the hip-hopper's fourth song to reach this level. It follows "Low" (featuring T-Pain, 6,372,000), "Right Round" (5,228,000) and "Good Feeling" (3,357,000). This marks the first time he has had back-to-back 3 million-sellers.

Luke Bryan's

"Country Girl (Shake It For Me)" tops the 2 million mark in digital sales this week. "Country Girl" is Bryan's best-selling song, but it's also his only song of his last five releases to fall short of the #1 spot on Hot Country Songs. It peaked at #4. How odd. Only two other male solo country artists have landed a 2 million-seller in the digital era: Jason Aldean (who has had four, counting a collabo with Kelly Clarkson) and Blake Shelton.

V.I.C.'s "Wobble" tops the 1 million mark this week. Not bad for a song that peaked at #94 on the Hot 100 (and #84 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs). The song was released in July 2008, but didn't reach the R&B chart until June 2011. It finally cracked the Hot 100 in January of this year.

U.S.A.: Lee Greenwood's 1984 perennial "God Bless The U.S.A." was the top-selling America-themed song over the Fourth of July weekend. It sold 25K copies this week, bringing its total to 738K. Others that fared well this year: Bruce Springsteen's 1985 hit "Born In The U.S.A.," Toby Keith's 2002 country hit "Courtesy Of The Red, White And Blue (The Angry American)" (11K) and Don McLean's 1972 smash "American Pie," each of which sold 11K.

Shameless Plug: Luke Bryan's "Rain Is A Good Thing" this week becomes the 100th country song to sell 1 million digital copies. It's Bryan's fifth million-seller, which puts him in a tie with Jason Aldean for the most among male country solo artists. This calls for a Chart Watch Extra. Earlier today, I posted a piece in which I look at the 100 biggest country hits in digital history. Taylor Swift has a pack-leading 15 of them, but Carrie Underwood isn't far behind with 10. I have lots more country lore in this Extra. If you're a country fan, don't miss it.
