Week Ending July 15, 2012. Songs: Blow Me (One More Hit)

P!nk's

"Blow Me (One Last Kiss)" vaults from #58 to #9 in its second week on the Hot 100. It's P!nk's third top 10 hit with an edgy title, following "U + Ur Hand" (#9 in 2007) and "F**kin' Perfect" (#2 in 2011). Paula Abdul had a #6 hit in 1991 titled "Blowing Kisses In The Wind." P!nk took that traditional romantic notion and turned it on its head. But while the "can-you-say-that?" title helped attract attention, the record's solid pop-rock craftsmanship is bringing it home.

The song is P!nk's 12th top 10 hit. She first cracked the top 10 in April 2000 with "There You Go." Billboard's Gary Trust notes that P!nk is in third place among female artists for most top 10 hits since January 2000. She trails only Rihanna (with 22) and Beyonce (with 14.) This week's move puts her ahead of Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, who have each had 11 top 10 hits.

Incidentally, P!nk has had more top 10 hits than any the other women who joined her on the all-star "Lady Marmalade" in 2001. Christina Aguilera is second with nine. Lil' Kim has had five; Mya three. Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott, who co-produced the record, has had 10 as an artist.

Carly Rae Jepsen's

"Call Me Maybe" holds at #1 for the sixth straight week. This is the longest run at #1 for a female solo artist since Adele's "Rolling In The Deep" had seven weeks on top from May to July 2011. It's the longest run at #1 for a Canadian artist since Nelly Furtado's "Promiscuous" (featuring Timbaland) had six weeks on top in 2006. It ties Blondie's similarly titled "Call Me," which had six weeks on top in 1980. That song went on to become Billboard's #1 song of 1980 in its year-end chart recap. Can "Call Me Maybe" possibly equal that feat? Stay tuned.

"Payphone" by Maroon 5 featuring Wiz Khalifa logs its fifth week at #2. It's the longest-run at #2 for a non-#1 song since Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" spent seven weeks in the runner-up slot in late 2009 and early 2010. Will "Payphone" eventually reach #1 and make all of this moot? Until this week, I thought so, but its digital sales are starting to taper off (it drops to #5 on Hot Digital Songs this week). Also, even if "Payphone" outlasts "Call Me Maybe," it now has to contend with Katy Perry's "Wide Awake," which threatens to overtake it on the Hot 100 as early as next week. Even so, "Payphone" has been a smash hit. It advances to #4 on the year-to-date chart this week. "Moves Like Jagger" (featuring Christina Aguilera) was the #4 best-selling digital hit of 2011.

Katy Perry's

"Wide Awake" jumps from #4 to #3. It's her 10th single to reach the top three. The song jumps to #1 on this week's Hot Digital Songs chart. It's her eighth #1 hit on the digital sales chart, a total equaled or topped only by Rihanna, with 11. It's Perry's second song to reach the top spot on the digital chart this year. "Part Of Me" hit the top spot in February. Perry is the first artist to land two #1 digital hits in 2012.

Rihanna's "Where Have You Been" dips from #5 to #6. It's Rihanna's first top five hit that didn't go all the way to #1 since "Run This Town," her 2009 collabo with Jay-Z and Kanye West (which peaked at #2). I hope Rihanna doesn't feel too bad. She's done OK.

Flo Rida

lands his eighth top 10 hit as "Whistle" jumps from #12 to #7. Flo Rida (real name: Tramar Dillard) has five songs on Nielsen SoundScan's running list of the 200 best-selling digital hits of all time. Those five songs ("Low," "Right Round," "Good Feeling," "Wild Ones" and "Club Can't Handle Me") have sold a combined total of 20,956,000 copies. But Flo Rida has been far less successful with full-length albums. His four albums have sold a combined total of just 833K copies. Fans clearly like Flo Rida, but one song at a time. So the pressure is on him to keep coming up with the goods. So far, he has been able to do just that.

Flo Rida has been the lead artist on all eight of his top 10 hits (which include the five hits listed above plus "In The Ayer," "Sugar" and now "Whistle"). This has been Flo Rida's best year on the Hot 100. "Good Feeling" logged three weeks at #3 in January and February. "Wild Ones" (featuring Sia) reached #5 in May.

Usher's

"Scream" holds at #10 for the fourth week. Assuming this is the record's peak position, this would be the longest run at #10 for a record that peaked in that spot since N.O.R.E.'s "Nothin'" spent four weeks at #10 in August 2002. "Scream" tops the 1 million mark in digital sales this week.

Frank Ocean's

"Thinkin Bout You" debuts at #85. It's the week's top new entry. (Nero's "Promises" is a re-entry.) The song is from Ocean's Channel Orange album, which enters The Billboard 200 at #2 this week…"Get It Started" by Pitbull featuring Shakira jumps from #99 to #89 in its second week…"Pop That" by French Montana featuring Drake,Rick Ross & Lil Wayne debuts at #90. It's from Excuse My French, rapper French Montana's smartly-titled upcoming debut album.

Thomas Rhett's

"Something To Do With My Hands" debuts at #93. Rhett is the 22-year old son of country singer Rhett Akins, who had a pair of top five country hits in the mid-1990s, "That Ain't My Truck" and "Don't Get Me Started." Akins "bubbled under" the Hot 100 in 1997, but he never cracked it, as his son does this week.

The Black Keys' "Gold On The Ceiling" re-enters the chart at #94…Ed Sheeran's "The A Team" debuts at #95. It's the first Hot 100 hit from Sheeran's album +, which cracked the top five on The Billboard 200 in June. The album has logged three weeks at #1 in the U.K…Phillip Phillips' "Home" re-enters the chart at #96. The song has already climbed as high as #10.

Train's "50 Ways To Say Goodbye" debuts at #98. The song owes an obvious debt to Paul Simon's 1976 smash "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover." It's the second single from the group's current album, California 37, following the top 10 "Drive By." Train's 2010 smash "Hey, Soul Sister" tops the 6 million mark in digital sales this week. (See item below.)

Big & Rich's "That's Why I Pray" debuts at #99. It's from the duo's upcoming album Hillbilly JedisEaston Corbin's "Lovin' You Is Fun" re-enters the chart at #100, the same position it held the last time it charted.

Train's "Hey, Soul Sister" tops the 6 million mark in digital sales this week. It's only the 11th song to sell that many digital copies. The song reached #3 in April 2010.

Two "boy band" hits, The Wanted's "Glad You Came" and One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful" top the 3 million mark in digital sales this week. "Glad You Came" has sold 3,032,000 copies. "What Makes You Beautiful" has sold 3,026,000. These songs have set a new record for "boy band" hits in the digital era. The old record was held by Jonas Brothers' 2008 hit "Burnin' Up," which has sold 1,786,000 copies.

And how are these groups' current hits doing? One Direction's "One Thing" drops from #39 (its peak to date) to #41 in its 16th week. The song keeps its "bullet," so a turnaround is entirely possible. Still, I'm surprised that the red-hot boy band is having any trouble. The Wanted, its arch-rivals (at least in the media), have a stronger week. "Chasing The Sun" jumps from #70 to #53 in its seventh week.

"4 Minutes" by Madonna featuring Justin Timberlake tops the 3 million mark in digital sales this week. The 2008 smash is by far Madonna's best-selling digital hit, but Timberlake has had two bigger-selling hits: "SexyBack" (featuring Timbaland, 3,959,000) and T.I.'s "Dead And Gone," on which he was featured (3,120,000). "4 Minutes" reached #3 in April 2008. It was Madonna's highest-charting hit since 2000's "Music."

Toby Keith's

"Red Solo Cup" tops the 2 million mark in digital sales this week. Keith is the fourth male solo country artist to land a 2 million-seller in the digital era. He follows Jason Aldean (who has had four), Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan. This is Keith's best-selling song. His second best-seller is his 2002 hit "Courtesy Of The Red, White And Blue (The Angry American)," which has sold 982K copies.

Taylor Swift lands her 16th million-seller with "Eyes Open." It's her second million-seller from the soundtrack to The Hunger Games: Songs From District 12 And Beyond. The first was "Safe & Sound," featuring The Civil Wars, which is up to 1,233,000. Swift has had more million-sellers than any other country artist in the digital era. Carrie Underwood is second with 10.

Shameless Plug: Kitty Wells, who died on Monday at 92, was the original "Queen of Country Music." In August 1952, Wells became the first female solo artist to, all by herself, land a #1 hit on Billboard's country chart. She achieved the feat with "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonky Angels." Wells went on to be the top female country hit-maker of the 1950s and 1960s, according to Joel Whitburn's Hot Country Songs 1944-2008. I paid tribute to Wells in a Chart Watch Extra that we posted on Monday. If you're a country fan, you might want to check it out.
