Week Ending Oct. 28, 2012. Songs: Chris Brown’s Comeback

Chris Brown's

"Don't Wake Me Up" jumps to #10 on the Hot 100. It's Brown's second top 10 hit of the year, following "Turn Up The Music," which peaked at #10 in March. This marks the first time that Brown has had multiple top 10 hits in a calendar year since 2008, when he amassed four (counting a featured credit on Lil Mama's "Shawty Get Loose").

That, of course, was before Brown's career was put in serious peril by his assault on Rihanna on the eve of the Grammys in 2009. Brown didn't return to the top 10 until the spring of 2011, when he peaked at #6 with "Look At Me Now "(featuring Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes).

Why is Brown's career on the upswing? Some time has passed. Also, "Don't Wake Me Up" and "Turn Up The Music" are both first-rate pop records. They were so good they couldn't be denied. You could even make an argument that they'd both have charted higher than #10 if the incident had never happened. Brown's 2008 hits, after all, included two #2 hits ("With You" and "Forever") and a #3 ("No Air," a collabo with Jordin Sparks).

Remember when women totally dominated the top 10, to the extent that male artists were almost shut out? For whatever reason, male artists have mounted a comeback. Eight of this week's top 10 hits are by male solo artists or all-male groups. The roster includes Maroon 5's "One More Night," which logs its seventh week at #1, and PSY's "Gangnam Style," which holds at #2 for the sixth straight week.

This marks the first time that the same two records were #1 and #2 for six straight weeks since late last year, when "We Found Love" by Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris and LMFAO's "Sexy And I Know It" were locked into those spots for seven straight weeks. (The two songs then switched positions, allowing LMFAO to log two weeks at #1, before Rihanna and Harris reclaimed the top spot for two more weeks.)

Rihanna

lands her 16th top five hit as "Diamonds" jumps from #8 to #5 in its fifth week. Only four female solo artists have landed 16 or more top five hits since 1958, when the Hot 100 was introduced. Madonna leads with 28, followed by Mariah Carey with 26, Janet Jackson with 24 and the late Whitney Houston with 19.

Combining group and solo hits (as I like to do), Diana Ross and Beyonce have each had 22 top five hits. Ross had 15 top five hits with the Supremes and seven on her own. Beyonce had nine top five hits with Destiny's Child and has had 13 on her own.

At just 24 (and eight months), Rihanna has amassed 16 top five hits faster than any other woman in chart history. She surpasses Beyonce, who was 24 and 11 months in August 2006 when she landed her 16th career top five hit, "Déjà vu" (featuring Jay-Z).

Want to know how the rest of the pack ranks? Ross was 26 in September 1970 when she landed her 16th career top five hit, "Ain't No Mountain High Enough." Jackson was 27 in September 1993 when she landed her 16th top five hit, "If." Carey was 27 in September 1997 when she scored with "Honey." Madonna was 31 in September 1989 when she hit with "Cherish." Houston was 33 in January 1997 when she made it with "I Believe In You And Me."

By reaching #5, "Diamonds" ties a different song with the same title by Herb Alpert featuring Janet Jackson, which reached #5 in June 1987. Rihanna's smash logs its fourth straight week at #1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

"As Long As You Love Me" by Justin Bieber featuring Big Sean logs its fifth week at 6. That's the longest run at #6 for a record that hasn't (yet) reached the top five since Twista's "Overnight Celebrity" (featuring an unbilled Kanye West) spent five weeks at #6 in the spring of 2004.

Bruno Mars

lands his ninth top 10 hit in less than three years as "Locked Out Of Heaven" jumps from #15 to #7 in its fourth week. This reflects a full week of sales following Mars' well-received appearance as host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live on Oct. 20. Five of Mars' top 10 hits have been solos. Four have been collabos. With its reggae accents, "Locked Out Of Heaven" has echoes of old hits by The Police.

Two songs drop out of the top 10 this week. Taylor Swift's "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" drops from #4 to #11. The song spent three weeks at #1, becoming Swift's first #1 pop hit. It holds at #1 on Hot Country Songs for the fourth straight week. P!nk's "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)" drops from #10 to #12. It peaked at #5.

"We Are Never Ever…" drops from #8 on last week's Hot Digital Songs chart completely off the chart this week. Its sales went from 112K last week to negative 83K this week. This negative tally reduced the song's release-to-date tally from 2,443,000 to 2,359,000. How can this be? Many fans took advantage of iTunes' "Complete Your Album" feature. When fans take advantage of that feature, they get a reduction on the price of the album, but the earlier song transaction is deducted from the song's tally.

Five more Swift songs enter the chart this week. Details below.

Phillip Phillips'

"Home" rebounds from #17 to #14 in its 18th week. The song has climbed as high as #9. Digital sales rank: #9 (85K)…Flo Rida's "I Cry" leaps from #24 to #15 in its fifth week. Digital sales rank: #8 (104K). The song is vying to become his ninth top 10 hit…Miguel's "Adorn" jumps from #22 to #18 in its 13th week. The song topped Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for four weeks.

It's the group's fifth million-seller…Florida Georgia Line's "Cruise" jumps from #29 to #24 in its 11th week.

"Girl On Fire" by Alicia Keys featuring Nicki Minaj vaults from #47 to #28 in its eighth week. It's Keys' most successful collaboration with another female artist since Eve's "Gangsta Lovin," on which she was featured, reached #2 in September 2002. "Put It In A Love Song," a 2010 collabo with Beyonce inexplicably "bubbled under" the chart at #102. "Speechless," a 2011 reunion with Eve failed to chart.

Imagine Dragons' "It's Time" jumps from #35 to #30 in its 21st week…"Finally Found You" by Enrique Iglesias featuring Sammy Adams jumps from #36 to #31 in its seventh week. The song has already climbed as high as #24.

Carly Rae Jepsen's

"Call Me Maybe" reaches the 6 million in digital sales in its 36th week. Only one song in digital history has sold 6 million this quickly. That's "Somebody That I Used To Know" by Gotye featuring Kimbra, which topped the 6 million mark in its 30th week. These two songs are the year's top two hits. "Somebody That I Used To Know" is up to 6,667,000. This year marks the first time in digital history that a song (much less two songs) has sold 6 million copies in a calendar year.

"Mercy" by Kanye West featuring Big Sean, Pusha T, 2 Chainz tops the 2 million mark in digital sales. The song was #1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for five weeks in July and August.

Beyonce's

"Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)" and Miley Cyrus' "Party In The U.S.A." both top the 5 million mark in digital sales this week. These are the best-sellers for both artists. Beyonce's second best-seller is "Irreplaceable" (3,139,000). Cyrus' is "The Climb" (3,517,000). "Single Ladies" logged four weeks at #1 in 2008 and went on to win a Grammy as Song of the Year. "Party In The U.S.A." logged three weeks at #2 in 2009.

Kenny Chesney's "Come Over" tops the 1 million mark in digital sales. It's his fourth million-seller. The song was #1 on Hot Country Songs for two weeks in August…Of Monsters and Men's "Little Talks" also tops the 1 million mark. It's the group's first million-seller.

Happy Halloween, everybody.
