Dawn Richard

It doesn't seem like it's been 8 years since Diddy introduced us to Dawn Richard on "Making The Band 3." Though all the ladies of Danity Kane are great talents there was always something special about Dawn who even stood out as a member in "Making The Band"'s offshoot girl group Danity Kane.

When Danity Kane disbanded, there were whispers that Diddy was grooming Dawn for a solo career. But instead of immediately putting out her own album, Dawn first joined the Bad Boy head's new group, Diddy Dirty Money.

After Diddy Dirty Money ran its course, Dawn began working on her solo record, but getting an early release date on the Bad Boy roster was tough as there were other artists in line ahead of her.

In late 2011, Dawn approached Diddy about being released from her contract so that she could venture out on her own and he approved her request. Less than six months later, Dawn unleashed her long-anticipated solo debut EP, "Armor On," a teaming with Grammy nominated songwriters Drew Scott and Carla Carter. "Armor On" debuted at No. 1 on iTunes' R&B/Soul chart.

Dawn recently stopped by Yahoo! to explain how she got Diddy to let her go, plus she breaks down the "Armor On" concept and discusses several songs.
