Hip-Hop Media Training

Guru, half of the legendary rap duo Gang Starr with DJPremiere, is recovering after undergoing surgery Monday.

The pioneering artist who spearheaded the successful Jazzmatazz series and whose song "Jazz Thing"was featured in Spike Lee's Mo BettaBlues, addressed his condition in an exclusive statement to Yo! Raps.

"I am dong fine and I am recovering!," he said. "I'm weakthough. Solaar is the only person who has the accurate info on my situation.Any info from anybody else is false! I appreciate your well wishes and all thelove!"

While some outlets have reported that Guru collapsed Sundayand experienced a heart attack, he did not address circumstances that lead upto the surgery.

MC Solaar, Guru's friend and labelmate, asked for privacy."Guru is resting and doing well after surgery," Solar said, Yo! Raps reports."The doctors say that he will fully recover from his illness. We thank everyonewho sends prayers our way and we appreciate the outpouring of love from aroundthe world!"

I definitely send prayers out to Guru. Gang Starr's secondalbum, 1991 Step Into The Arena, featuring classics "Just To Get A Rep" and "Who's Gonna Take The Weight." Itwas the first promo album I received as a new music journalist then working fora community newspaper.
