VaShawn Mitchell’s new single and video, “Turning Around For Me,” which he premieres with Yahoo! Music, is partly the result of a form of divine intervention.
Mitchell had been nervous about coming up with a follow up for his massive gospel hit “Nobody Greater,” that scored 11 Stellar Awards nominations, the most spins on gospel radio in 2011, and an invitation to perform with Fantasia at the 2012 Essence Festival. But he realized he needed to relax.
“I ended up getting stuck behind an accident on the expressway and God pretty much dropped in my spirit When you do things my way, things will turn around for you,” he explained to Yahoo! Music.
Mitchell said he was lead to research turning around in the bible and was enlightened. He read a scripture that said, “I’m perfecting the things that’s concerning you.”
Mitchell thought the scripture was relevant to things happening in the world. “I began to look at the news and what was going on in the world and began to write this song as it relates to people who were losing homes and losing jobs and going through trying to get finances for school,” he said. “God revealed to me that in this next phase there was going to be a turn around. And people were going to start getting back in school, jobs opening up. I just wanted to remind the body that if we declare it and say it and do it, it will happen. It will turn around. That’s where the song came from.”
Mitchell is pleased with the outcome. “I’m glad the song and video were able to capture the message of the song,” he added. “We saw [hurricane] Sandy, the school shooting that happened recently. I had to get that message out that regardless of what we see, there is a turn around that is happening in our lives.”
“Turning Around For Me,” from Mitchell’s Created 4 This album, is already top 10 on Billboard’s Top Gospel Songs Chart.
Mitchell is currently on the United As One Tour with James Fortune, Kierra Sheard and Zacardi Cortez.
