Macklemore Stars in Very Own ‘West Side Story’ on New Song ‘Downtown’
Who knew Macklemore was a fan of classic Broadway musicals? His latest video for the new song “Downtown” is basically an extended riff on “West Side Story." And if you were wondering if Mack is a Shark or a Jet, just take into account that he does call his fanbase the Shark Face Gang.
And with a name like “Downtown”, the video is also clearly a response to Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’s “Uptown Funk."
But in between all the choreographed dance moves, “Downtown” is also somewhat of a spiritual sequel to Macklemore’s biggest hit “Thrift Shop”-- that super catchy tribute to bargain shopping. But this time the rapper’s on a search for the perfect…moped. Specifically, one with a “chromed-out mirror."
Macklemore’s latest isn’t only an ode to two-wheelers, it’s also a throwback to some of his own hip-hop idols and features appearances from Grandmaster Caz, Kool Moe Dee, and Melle Mel.
“Downtown” is the second song released off Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’s upcoming album and they will be performing it this Sunday at the MTV VMAs.
But before we get to the VMAs, this weekend make sure to tune into the UK's biggest dance music festival, Creamfields! Yahoo Live is streaming sets from EDM stars like Afrojack, Fatboy Slim, 3 Are Legend, and many more. It all starts tomorrow at 10 a.m. PT and to watch from wherever, just visit here.
