By most accounts, Monday night's debut of "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" was a smashing success. Fallon and Will Smith performed a hilarious "Evolution of Hip-Hop Dancing" skit; U2 did its new single, "Invisible," on a rooftop 70-stories high in front of a stunning sunset; a bevy of stars — from Lady Gaga to Joe Namath — made cameos; and ratings were big.
Yet there was one moment during the show that some are Twitter are calling out as a misstep.
At the conclusion of Will Smith's interview, Fallon jokingly presented the rapper-actor with a T-shirt featuring '80s Brit rockers the Smiths. "It's a very cool shirt, goes with a lot of stuff. You can get it at Hot Topics," Falllon joked. "There's a lot of places you can get that shirt, but there's not a lot of places you can get this shirt."
Fallon then proceeded to pull out another T-shirt with a similar "Smiths" logo, but instead of Morrissey and company, the black-and-white photo on the tee featured Will, his wife Jada Pinkett Smith, daughter Willow, and son Jaden — a foursome just like the band.
However, the T-shirt created a rumble in the Twittersphere because Will Smith has another son, Will Smith III, aka Trey, from his first marriage to Sheree Zampino.
Trey is now a grown man at 21. He was the inspiration for Will's one-time company Treyball Development Inc. and appeared with his father in the video for his 1998 single "Just the Two of Us."
Now it's Smith's younger children who are following in their dad's footsteps, trying to carve out their own careers as entertainers. Still, many fans are calling out Fallon for the omission.
Gaffe or honest mistake? So far, Fallon's publicist at NBC has not responded to calls seeking comment. But what do you think?
