When he was a preteen, he scrambled to learn how to play a song to get a girl's attention.

"I wanted to play songs for this girl that I was trying to impress," Robin told Yahoo Music in 2007. "She really liked this Richard Marx ['Right Here Waiting'] song. I was 11 years old. So I sat down and I started [playing]. And then I just started writing my own songs."

Robin didn't have girl problems for long. In school, he began dating his wife actress Paula Patton, who he married in 2005.

"We've been together this whole journey, this whole way," he said. "You get to a point where you realize that we all need somebody in our corner. We all need somebody who really loves us just the way we are, dirty drawers and everything. I consider myself very blessed and very lucky. To anybody let alone this amazing beautiful, powerful woman be the one that stand by my side."
