Prince fans are well aware that the famously reclusive icon very rarely makes appearances outside of his own musical career. That said, it came as a fun surprise when it was announced this week that he'd be guest starring on the post-Super Bowl episode of sitcom New Girl this year.
But, what's even more of a surprise: Prince himself is actually a huge fan of the show, and it was all his idea to join the production!
"He contacted us last season because he's a huge fan," executive producer Brett Baer told E! News. "He knows everything about the show. He contacted Zooey [Deschanel] and Hannah [Simone] directly and asked to do the show. We couldn't work it out last year. But when the Super Bowl thing was floated, it was perfect timing."
The show's other executive producer, Dave Finkel, added that Prince knew exactly how he wanted to fit into the storyline. "He said, ‘I want to be involved in the show in a real way and I want to help Nick and Jess with their relationship...He's a Nick and Jess shipper!"
The episode, which will air directly following the game February 2 on Fox, features lead character Deschanel attending a mansion party thrown by the famous musician, which her friends are determined to crash. (Apparently, this is where Prince offers up his slate of relationship tips for the couple.)
Yet another surprising element to this whole story is the fact that Prince reportedly is quite gifted in the field of comedy. As Finkel told E! News, "He's genuinely funny. He's got a very quiet, wry sense of humor but he kills."
"There's a moment in the episode where he's sitting in between Zooey and Jake on a bench. And it's a silent beef and he's just looking between them trying to figure them out. And it's hilarious. He has crazy comic instincts."
