The Civil Wars Abruptly Cancel Tour Dates, Cite ‘Internal Discord’

Two-time Grammy-winning duo the Civil Wars threw a bomb onto their fans Tuesday when, instead of chattering about Election Day like much of the rest of social media, they abruptly announced the cancellation of all their upcoming tour dates.

Is the pair breaking up for good? Luckily, that doesn't seem to be the exact case. In a statement on their website, Joy Williams and John Paul White noted that they hope to deliver new music next year.

"We sincerely apologize for the canceling of all of our tour dates. It is something we deeply regret," the statement reads. "However, due to internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition we are unable to continue as a touring entity at this time. We thank each and every one of you for your amazing love & support. Our sincere hope is to have new music for you in 2013."

The duo also offered to reimburse fans who have made travel arrangements or paid service charges to reserve seats at their now-cancelled shows. If you have costs you cannot recoup, email the band at info@civilwars.com with a scan of your receipts. "We will do our best to reimburse you for non-refundable charges," they assure.

So, it's all fine and well that the Civil Wars are being responsible about the fallout from their decision--but the question remains. What is actually going on? Both Williams and White gave no explanation on their individual Twitter accounts, leaving fans to speculate on the reasons behind their abrupt announcement. One theory bounced around involves Williams's relatively new role of mom--she gave birth to her son in June.

The Civil Wars' debut full-length album, Barton Hollow, took home Grammy Awards for Best Country Duo/Group Performance and Best Folk Album in 2012. They are the Americana Music Association's currently reigning Duo/Group of the Year. The pair attracted much attention for their collaboration with Taylor Swift, "Safe And Sound," which appeared on the companion album for 2012's hit film The Hunger Games.
