Sad news: George Strait will not be performing at the CMT Awards Wednesday due to the death of his father, John Strait. The elder Strait passed away Tuesday at the age of 91, following a long bout of illness and a nearly month-long hospital stay.

"We are grateful for the time over the last few weeks we were able to spend with Daddy before he passed away," George Strait said in a statement. "I want to thank everyone for their prayers and support during this difficult time as we mourn our family's loss."

Strait's dad worked as a Texas schoolteacher and rancher prior to his retirement. He also was responsible for raising George and George's brother after his marriage to their mother ended in divorce.

The family is planning a private funeral service. For those who wish to honor the elder Strait, donations can be made to the Jenifer Strait Memorial Foundation.
