Not even hugely popular past "X Factor U.K." boy-band contestants like JLS, One Direction, or Jedward managed to win the entire competition, so this is a big deal across the pond. The Spice Girls' Melanie C is even predicting that Little Mix--aka Jade Thirwall, Perrie Edwards, Jesy Nelson, and Leigh Anne Pinnock--could become the next Spice Girls.
Little Mix's coronation single is, oddly, a remake of folksy Irish singer-songwriter Damien Rice's "Cannonball" (sort of following in the indie tradition of last year's winner, Matt Cardle, whose first single was a cover of a song by the Britrock band Biffy Clyro). This seems like a bizarre choice of debut single for any "next Spice Girls," but hey, I'm happy to see the talented Mr. Rice get some royalties. As for Little Mix's future, we'll see how far their girl power takes them, but for now, congratulations to them for making "X Factor" history.
