‘Idol’ Favorite Casey Abrams Hospitalized, May Be Disqualified

Melodica/stand-up bass wunderkind Casey Abrams's "Lullaby Of Birdland" and "Georgia On My Mind" auditions are already the stuff of legend on "American Idol" Season 10, making the affable 19-year-old an early frontrunner. He has already reportedly fast-tracked to the top 24. But sadly, Casey's run on the show may be cut short. According to TMZ, Casey was rushed to the hospital Wednesday during "Idol" rehearsals after complaining of stomach pains. As of this writing, it's not clear what's wrong with Casey, but he'll be staying in the hospital overnight--and possibly longer.

Since the top 12 males' first performance show is taping this Friday, this could pose a real problem. If Casey is still hospitalized two days from now and unable to compete, he'll be disqualified. That would be a major setback for Casey, but more importantly, it'd be a setback for the show. Casey Abrams is one of the best things "Idol" has going this year, and Season 10 just wouldn't be the same without him.

This predicament gives me total déjà vu, remembering Crystal Bowersox's health scare last year. The diabetic was rushed to the hospital the week of "Idol" Season 9's first live performance tapings, and was nearly disqualified herself. Producers switched the order of the male and female episodes to allow Crystal an extra day's rest, and Crystal recovered just in the nick of time. As we all know by now, she later made it all the way to the finale. Imagine what might have happened if "Idol" hadn't bent the rules.

That decision, which was unheard of at the time, had cynics understandably crying foul and accusing "Idol" of preferential treatment. But now the precedent has been set. So if Casey isn't on the mend by Friday, will producers tape the ladies' show that day instead, so Casey has until Monday's taping to get well? If they made such schedule adjustments for Crystal, I feel they should do so for Casey. He deserves his chance on the big stage, and "Idol" viewers deserve the chance to see him perform.

Everyone at Yahoo! wishes Casey a speedy recovery and hopes to see him rock that melodica very soon. Watch this space for updates.
