For the third year in a row, "So You Think You Can Dance" has scored a much-deserved Emmy nomination for Outstanding Reality Competition Program…but it still seems like an underdog up against mighty TV titans like "The Voice," "Project Runway," "Dancing With the Stars," and nine-time winner "The Amazing Race." Could this be the year that this beloved cult show, which has won six technical Emmys for choreography, really gets its due and wins the big prize?

Speaking backstage at "SYTYCD," the show's co-creator/producer/judge Nigel Lythgoe remained (uncharacteristically) humble about his series' Emmy odds. "We are a well-loved, well-supported show by our fans. We're a small show. We are the little show that could. And I'm really happy with that," he insisted. "We might be small, but we're beautiful, and we're one of the few arts programs on broadcast television…If we win an Emmy, it would sort of take away from us being this little cultural gem."

Of course, Nigel admitted that if "SYTYCD" were to win, "I'd effing well love it! But I'm also sensible."

Nigel is accustomed to losing out to "The Amazing Race," since his old program, "American Idol," was passed over for Emmy glory time and time again (and wasn't even nominated in 2012 or 2013). "And 'Idol' deserved [to win] many, many years ago," he pointed out.

Regardless, there's plenty of hope for "SYTYCD" at the 2013 Emmys. The show's charming Cat Deeley is nominated for Outstanding Reality Host, and Nigel remains optimistic that "SYTYCD" will take home another trophy for Outstanding Choreography, a category the show has dominated for several seasons. Four of this year's seven Outstanding Choreography Emmy nominations are for "SYTYCD" routines (by Sonya Tayeh, Mandy Moore, Tabitha & Napoleon, and Travis Wall), and even "SYTYCD" alum Allison Holker is up for a number that she co-choreographed with Derek Hough for rival dance show "DWTS."

Here's hoping this "little show" will have a big night at the Emmys on September 22! I'd effing love that, too.
