What’s Up, Lilly Scott?

Regular readers of this column know that my favorite female contestant of "American Idol" Season 9 was Lilly Scott, the quirky blonde with a penchant for mandolins, melodicas, Moogs, thrift-store frocks, leftfield Beatles covers, and Animal Collective. She was one of the coolest contestants to ever appear on the show, and the night she went home, narrowly missing the top 12, was the most tragic night of Season 9 (a tragedy only compounded by the fact that Alex Lambert and Katelyn Epperly were also voted off that evening).

But maybe Lilly was just too cool for "Idol." She said in a post-elimination interview with USA Today: "I feel like my fanbase wasn't there....I think my voting demographic is more of the underground scene, who don't even own a TV. They were probably all out riding their bikes and or doing something more productive than watching TV, let alone 'American Idol.'"

Well, attention, cool people: Get off your damn bikes and listen up. Lilly's touring this summer with Varlet, the awesome band she formed in 2005 with her brother David, and as I listen to their sweet indie/folktronica sound--think Corinne Bailey Rae, Joanna Newsom, Feist, Regina Spektor, Sia, that sort of thing--I actually get angry, because it's even more apparent to me now how much Lilly was robbed on "Idol."

Check out Lilly's music below, and let's hope her fanbase finally finds her.
