"Oh no, no, please God, help me!” cries Black Sabbath vocalist Ozzy Osbourne, as visitors wander through a graveyard, approach a towering Gothic cathedral with stained glass window and enter the "Black Sabbath: 13 3D"maze at this year's Universal Studios Hollywood Halloween Horror Nights.
If this is enough to cause some folks to – as the song "Black Sabbath" goes, "turn around quick and start to run" – they won't be the first.
"I remember when we first started playing that onstage, people would literally get scared and run off," Osbourne confirmed in a promotional video.
"Black Sabbath: 13 3D," one of five horror-themed mazes at this year's event, features demons, madhouses, a corpse-filled battlefield and a nuclear wasteland inhabited by mutated beasts; and each corner and creature was inspired by lyrics from bassist Geezer Butler. "It’s absolutely incredible [to have my lyrics influence this maze]," Butler said. "It’s good to go from music to stage shows to the Universal horror thing. It's great."
"Black Sabbath: 13 3D" opens September 20 and runs through November 2. The maze was named after 13, the band’s first studio album with Osbourne since 1978's Never Say Die! The set came out June 11 and debuted at number one on the Billboard album chart. However, the Sabbath maze will include elements culled from '70s Sabbath songs such as "Black Sabbath," "War Pigs," "Paranoid" and "Iron Man."
Other mazes at this year's Halloween Horror Nights are "The Walking Dead: No Safe Haven," "Evil Dead: Book of the Dead," "Insidious: Into the Further" and "El Cucuy: The Boogeyman."
On September 20, Butler, Sharon Osbourne, "The Walking Dead" special effects coordinator Greg Nicotero and cast members from the show will be present at Halloween Horror Nights to take part in the "Eyegore Awards," which celebrates those responsible for Hollywood's most horrifying scenes, films and stunts. The ceremony will be hosted by McKenzie Westmore of SyFy's "Face Off" and will take place from 7:30 to 8 p.m.
