Fred Armisen Gets Punk’d On ‘SNL’

Fred Armisen is one of Saturday Night Live's coolest music-associated alums, with a bona fide background in indie rock. He was once married to Sally Timms of the Mekons; he's played drums for the Grifters side-project Those Bastard Souls, the Blue Man Group, and Les Savy Fav; he had a cameo in the Flaming Lips' cult movie Christmas On Mars; and long before he went into comedy, he was a member of the Chicago punk band Trenchmouth in the 1980s.

So naturally Fred was perfectly cast in last weekend's "Fistfight In The Parking Lot"  SNL hardcore skit, playing in a fictional reunited '80s punk band alongside Dave Grohl (who was the evening's musical guest with his side group, Them Crooked Vultures) and host Ashton Kutcher, who brought new meaning to the term "punk'd."

Fred played an aging but still raging punk quite awesomely and convincingly, and we believe "Fistfight" just might usurp "I'm On A Boat" as the new SNL viral hit. We hope Fred keeps his fake band together for some time, and that he's soon available for weddings and Bar Mitzvahs in real life.
