fun. is nominated for Best New Artist; Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for Some Nights; and Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “We Are Young,” its smash collabo with Janelle Monae.
In addition, The Black Keys have a chance to become one of just 10 groups or duos to win five awards in one night. The duo is nominated for Album of the Year and Best Rock Album for El Camino; and Record of the Year, Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song for “Lonely Boy.” (Dan Auerbach is also nominated for Producer of the Year, Non Classical, but that’s an individual nomination.)
Here’s a complete list of the nine groups and duos that have won five or more Grammys in one night.
Simon & Garfunkel, 5. Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel won five awards for their work on Bridge Over Troubled Water and its classic title track. These reflected their roles as performers, producers and arrangers. Simon won two additional awards for writing the title song.
Bee Gees, 5. The brother trio won five awards in 1979, including Album of the Year for the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. They also won Producer of the Year (along with their colleagues Albhy Galuten and Karl Richardson).
Dixie Chicks, 5. The country trio won five awards in 2007. Their haul included Record of the Year and Song of the Year for “Not Ready To Make Nice” and Album of the Year for Taking The Long Way. The sweep was seen as an endorsement of freedom of speech, after the trio suffered a backlash after lead singer Natalie Maines made harsh comments about President Bush.
Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, 5. The unlikely pair won five awards in 2009, including Record of the Year for “Please Read The Letter” and Album of the Year for Raising Sand. That’s the biggest haul in one night for a collaboration by two artists who don’t normally record together.
Foo Fighters, 5. The veteran rock band won five awards last year. They made a clean sweep of the four awards in the rock field and also won Best Long Form Music Video for Foo Fighters: Back And Forth.
