Mariah Carey Upstaged By Her Own Mom In New Holiday Video

If you were ever wondering who Mariah Carey inherited her massive multi-octave range from, look no further than her new Christmas video, "O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus"--which features some tree-rattling operatic belting from Mimi's own mama, Patricia Carey.

Granted, their duet is shrill enough that we can all be certain that if the Carey family dog ever strayed, one blast of this tune would have him running back in no time. Apparently it was never a very silent night in the Carey household. But for the most part, the Careys' cross-generational voices blend very nicely--that is, when Mariah isn't being out-sung by her own mom. Yes, what's most most notable about this video is that Patricia, a former opera singer and vocal coach, is the real star of the show here. Watch her sing around the 1:30 mark below:

The mother-daughter duet appears on Mariah's new seasonal album, Merry Christmas II You. "We discussed doing a duet and I really wanted to make sure it happened on this Christmas album," Mariah really told the press. "So I feel really blessed to be able to have this opportunity to have this on record forever--a song with my mom. She's the one who really got me into being so festive at Christmas."

Patricia is also reportedly the one who got Mariah into singing at all: When Mimi was just 3 years old, she overheard her mother rehearsing Verdi's Rigoletto and sang it herself. "She sang it, in Italian, at exactly the right point," Patricia once told People.

This isn't the first time that Patricia and Mariah have appeared onscreen together, by the way; the two of them were interviewed for Mimi's 1993 concert special, during which Patricia raved about how she recognized her daughter's vocal gifts early on. And considering how spectacular Patricia sounds on Mariah's new holiday song, clearly the woman is an expert on the subject of singing:

Anyway, since Mimi is quite visibly pregnant in her holiday video, it's probable that her unborn child was exposed to a whole lot of high-decibel Carey crooning during this clip's recording. Will Mariah's Christmas baby be joining the family chorus on a third Mariah holiday album years from now? That remains to be seen (and heard, loudly)...but if so, it's likely that Patricia Carey will still be upstaging them all.
