Nine Inch Nails is doing their best to turn the Sept. 3 release of Hesitation Marks, their first album in five years, into a big event. The band has revealed that the album will be released with four different covers — one for each format of the release.

All four covers were created by Russell Mills, who did the artwork for the band's 1994 album The Downward Spiral and several other releases related to the album. The artist's reunion with Trent Reznor and company sticks with the "Came Back Haunted" theme of the new album.

Mills, who has also created album art for Brian Eno, David Sylvian and Peter Gabriel, said in a statement, "This renewed collaboration very quickly suggested massive potential for the strange and the familiar to collide and collude in works that I hoped would encapsulate, by allusion, suggestion, metaphor and association, the conceptual ideas imbued in the album as well as in the undertow of its sonic world. I've tried to make works that obliquely allude to the essence of the subject matter, to its emotional core. I hope that they will invite multiple readings."

In creating the Hesitation Marks cover art, Mills used traditional oil and acrylic paints and varnishes with sundry objects and topped it off with chemical processes that include burning, bleaching, calcification and erosion. We're assuming no one was injured or killed during the process.

Here's a rundown on each of the covers and the materials used:
