Nice prank…or a bit on the mean side? The lads in One Direction were good and fooled recently when a pair of comedians pulled a whopper over on them--resulting in the panicked band racing to call an ambulance.

British comedy duo Ant and Dec, who were filming a segment for their variety show Saturday Night Takeaway, ran the prank by dressing up as a 1D superfan (complete with knit Harry Styles-style beanie and 1D bomber jacket), and a TV producer from New Zealand introducing him to the band.

When the "fan" met the five-piece, he suffered an apparent asthma attack and "collapsed" as a result of over-excitement..

The poor One Direction guys, of course, had no idea this was a bunch of hooey, so they reacted like any normal people would and hollered for help. A "paramedic"--another fake--reportedly arrived and assisted the bogus fan while the band looked on.

"It was such fun and they fell for it," host Dec, who played the superfan, told London's Evening Standard. We think it's a little on the cruel side, personally--but to each his own.

The episode will air Saturday on British network ITV.
