If that wasn't enough of a pop culture convergence to make your head explode, get this: The song appears to be about Mayer's one-time girlfriend Taylor Swift, with the chorus, "You're like 22 girls in one / And none of them know what they're running from / Was it just too far to fall / For a little paper doll."
The song also references a "dress of gold and blue," like the one Taylor wore when she made a 2009 appearance on "The View," back when she and Mayer were still dating.
Additionally, Mayer references a scarf, which Swift herself noted in her tune "All Too Well"... and he adds in the lyric "Someone's gonna paint you another sky" which seems to be a response to Swift's "Dear John," in which she sings "You paint me a blue sky and go back and turn it to rain."
Of course, the most obvious parallel is that Taylor's latest single from her multi-platinum Red album is "22." That song opens with the lyrics, "It feels like a perfect night / To dress up like hipsters / And make fun of our exes." Later in the chorus, T-Swizzle croons, "Everything will be alright if we just keep dancing / Like we're 22."
Remember that the Swift-Mayer lyrical spat has been going on at least since 2010, when Taylor released the aforementioned "Dear John" on her album Speak Now. That song, which reportedly "humiliated" Mayer, contains the lyrics, "Dear John / I see it all now that you're gone / Don't you think I was too young / To be messed with / The girl in the dress / Cried the whole way home / I should've known."
Maybe John and Taylor should take Joanna Rohrback's advice and prance out their differences together. Now that would be a video we wouldn't want to miss.
