Jason Derulo is channeling the sparks that fly between him and his “American Idol” lady love, Jordin Sparks, on his forthcoming album. The pop singer said that he and Sparks have been working in the studio together, and that it’s not unusual for them to butt heads.

"I'm a perfectionist, but more importantly, I'm a control freak in what I want things to sound like, and she's the same way,” Derulo told MTV News. “It's just that. I mean we made it happen. In the end, it's not like crazy anger or anything like that."

Derulo dropped his new single, “The Other Side,” on Tuesday, and the upbeat tune tells the story of unexpectedly falling in love, which was presumably inspired by Sparks.

He added that the near-death accident that fractured his neck in January 2012 gave him a new outlook on life, which comes across on this album. "I've been working on my album for about a year and I really wanted to make sure the material was ready and that I came back different and better than before," he said. “I came off of a near-death experience, and it really helped me to grow up and change up a little bit. I feel like I'm a different person. I'm a little more grown-up, and my music will always match that. So it's a Jason Derulo that is a little more sleek, a little more refined.”

The singer revealed that the album has all kinds of material, ranging from “super-emotional love songs” to “crazy party records,” which all relate back to his experiences over the past year.

The tunes that he and Sparks have been working on are still under wraps for the time being, but fans can look forward to a sexy new video for “The Other Side” scheduled to be released in late April. "You're going to see a lot of hot sexiness and some dancing," he said.
