News of LCD Soundsystem's imminent retirement shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who has read any of the band's press in the past year. Since their most recent album This Is Happening was released in May, Murphy has made it very clear that he wanted to stop performing live after the group finished promoting the record. Also, a large chunk of the lyrics on This Is Happening are about the ways in which nonstop touring has damaged Murphy's personal life.
Though this show at MSG will mark the end of LCD Soundsystem as a live act, it does not mean that Murphy will stop releasing music under that name. In various interviews over the course of last year, Murphy claimed he would still put out singles and other tracks as LCD Soundsystem. Also, in a post concerning the final gig on his label DFA Records' message board, Murphy was careful to say that they were retiring "as this live band," which leaves the door open for performances with a different line-up in the future.
