Miley Cyrus Disses Country Music

Our Country

So, the latest from Miley Cyrus: Despite being the daughter of Billy Ray Cyrus and the goddaughter of Dolly Parton--she ain't no country girl.

"It feels contrived on so many levels," the 17-year-old pop star told Parade, noting that the scene "scares" her.

"Unless you're wearing a cowboy hat and cowboy boots and singing and whining about your girlfriend or boyfriend leaving you it's not going to sell. I think that's why my dad finally got out of it. You have to wear those cowboy boots and be sweet as pie. It makes me nervous, the politics of it all."

Oh, Miley. Why do I think this is going to come back and bite you in the butt? Yes, we know you aren't a bona fide country artist--in fact, I'd say your art is primarily acting and not music. However. Let us count the ways in which alienating the country world will do you no favors.

1) Taylor Swift, a pop-star-cum-actress who has not shunned her country roots, is eclipsing you (and pretty much everyone in the world) in popularity.

2) Country music is hotter than ever now. It's one of the few genres out there with genuinely loyal fans who are willing to consistently shell out their hard-earned dollars for music and shows. I mean, come on--even Bret Michaels, whom you recorded a duet with, was a judge on Nashville Star. And country fans tend to get really mean when you disrespect them, or something they believe in. (I don't have to give examples of this, do I?)

3) Country's a genre you can grow old gracefully in. Taylor Swift--like your father, and especially like Dolly Parton--will be able to continue her musical career way beyond the first bloom of youth if she plays her cards right. Look at artists such as Reba McEntire, who are even cooler now than when they started out more than three decades ago. You will not find this quality of longevity in any other genre of music; and you will not find it in the film/tv world unless you are Meryl Streep, which you are not.

4) What you said is just mean. Why be a hater? And, it's not even accurate. Plenty of country stars are not sweet as pie. I don't think you'd win in a fight with Miranda Lambert, for example. And there are scads of successful country songs out there which have nothing to do with whiny breakups. They're about edgy stuff; like drugs and sex, even! "Weed With Willie" or "Save A Horse (Ride A Cowboy)," two oldies but goodies, yeah?

5) Furthermore--"contrived on so many levels"? You are an actress, girl. That's your world, my friend.

6) And finally--for pete's sake, your poor dad suffered through how many renditions of "Achy Breaky Heart" and wore that damn mullet for how long, just to provide a nice home for you and your family, and you're going to diss where that comes from? I am just appalled.

So, Miley. I'm sad you had to say this. I like your outfits on the red carpet, and I even read your book (my preteen niece lent it to me). I've always liked you, even when others pick on you. But--don't come crying to me when you are 35 years old and you decide you'd like to cut a country album. Yeah, we know "The Climb" charted well. But I ain't listenin'. And hopefully Nashville won't be, either.

PS: To all readers, my blog has changed its name from Viva NashVegas to Our Country due to a copyright infringement. But it's 100% the same me, and my same opinions. Yee-haw!
