  • (WireImage)John Legend has always kept company with extraordinary people.

The Grammy award winning singer, who kicked off Yahoo! On the Road with a concert in New York Friday, made his major recording debut on one of the biggest R&B/pop albums of 1998, Lauryn Hill’s “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” that has sold 19 million copies worldwide.

Legend, who then performed under his birth name John Stephens, played the piano on Hill’s top 40 hit, “Everything is Everything.”

Aside from Hill’s smoky vocals, it’s the piano that drives the song’s irresistible melody.

Legend met Hill through a mutual friend Tara Michel. Michel and Legend were in a choir together; he played piano. “[Tara] said, ‘You should come meet Lauryn. I’m going to sing background vocals on some of the record,’” Legend said about Michel, who had known Hill since they were children in New Jersey.

Upon meeting Hill, Legend auditioned for her, playing two songs. One was a cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Love’s in Need of Love Today” from his “Songs in the Key of Life” album, and the other was the song he wrote, “Too Late.”

Hill immediately offered him an opportunity. “Lauryn said, ‘Why don’t you play on this record we’re working on right now? And it

  • If the first day of our month-long Yahoo! On the Road series is any indication of the greatest to come, we are in excellent shape. Friday morning started with our host Ben Lyons having cupcakes with the GMA Live morning crew and ended with Grammy award winning John Legend performing a spectacular show at New York’s United Palace Theatre. Get more details and other highlights from the day in the recap below:

    1) As if John Legend isn’t already miles ahead of his fellow male soul contemporaries, he broadened his lead Friday, playing a full set with the Salomé Chamber Orchestra at New York’s United Palace Theatre. “This is the first time we’ve done something like this,” he said, 17 minutes into his one-hour-and-15-minute set. The synergy was spot on as they accompanied him on his already easy, sweet classics “Where Did My Baby Go,” “Again,” and especially “Good Morning” and “Ordinary People.” The latter actually felt much like the original. The attentive audience listened in near silence, save several women who could not resist shouting their love for Legend during quiet moments.

  • At New York's United Palace Theatre, Ben Lyons caught up with John Legend just before his kickoff performance for the Yahoo! On the Road concert series. Legend discussed everything from his charity to his new album, and it was hard not to love his romantic gesture for his fiancee, model Chrissy Teigen (which he mentions about one minute into the interview).

In one of his new songs called "The Beginning," he describes cooking breakfast. When asked for a little more information, Legend said he is no slouch in the kitchen -- especially when it comes to making food for Teigen.

"I am actually quite good at cooking breakfast, that is one of my specialties. I am very good at a breakfast sandwich. Chrissy's always got cravings for Sausage Egg McMuffin, and I basically can make my own version of that," said Legend.
