Daft Punk's surprise video is the talk of Coachella

Day one of Southern California's Coachella music festival in the Indio desert boasted an impressive lineup of acts, from the old-school (Stone Roses, Blur, Jurassic 5, Sparks) to the new (Foals, Palma Violets, Jake Bugg, Passion Pit). But the act that made the biggest impression did so without even showing up: Yes, the talk of Coachella Friday was not a concert but a commercial, basically, for Daft Punk's Random Access Memories, one of the most anticipated albums of summer 2013.

Amid rumors that the Parisian popbots would actually play a secret Coachella gig--and following the seven-year comedown from the duo's epic 2006 Coachella set, still regarded as one of the greatest Coachella moments ever--a video teaser played on the jumbotrons at the Main Stage and in the Mojave Tent on Friday night, right before respective sets by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Infected Mushroom. As Daft Punk's famously chrome-plated helmet-heads appeared onscreen, grooving to their funky-fresh new track "Get Lucky" alongside the Neptunes' Pharrell and legendary producer Nile Rodgers, Coachella spectators understandably went crazy, rushing both stages and chanting, "Daft Punk! Daft Punk! Daft Punk!"

Alas, there was nothing more to see than a 102-second trailer, no live show--but one minute and 42 seconds was all it the time took to a) learn that Random Access Memories will also feature the Strokes' Julian Casablancas, Animal Collective's Panda Bear, Giorgio Moroder, Paul Williams, Chilly Gonzales, DJ Falcon, and Todd Edwards; b) realize that the album will be face-meltingly, mind-blowingly amazing, if "Get Lucky" is anything to go by; and c) have Daft Punk upstage every band that actually did play Coachella.

Poor Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Infected Mushroom, that they had to follow this.
