Icona Pop Says 'I Love It' to Clemson University Crowd, Pulls Them On Stage

By now, fans of the Swedish gal-pal duo Icona Pop are familiar with the pair's origin as artists and friends, which arose out of heartbreak and, like a fairytale, had a very happy ending.

"I was dumped, and a mutual friend forced me to go to a party. Caroline was hosting it,' Aino Jawo explains of her first meeting with future bandmate Caroline Hjelt, with whom she described "love at first sight." The pair, of course, went on to rock pop charts with their insanely infectious hit "I Love It." All of this is familiar territory, right?

Well, what might not be so well known are some of the tidbits the girls dished out before playing a packed hall at Clemson University's Brooks Center for the Performing Arts, including some of their--unexpected--musical influences. The artist on their playlist that would most surprise fans? The '80s hitmaker Simply Red (whom they claim to love). The song they most wish they'd written? It's a tie between the Clash's "Should I Stay or Should I Go," or ... wait for it ... Sisqó's 1999 anthem "Thong Song."

If that doesn't suggest this duo has a fairly wide range in terms of musical influences, nothing will really...but their performance November 7 at Clemson certainly showed off the pair's flexibility in getting the audience whipped up.

One of the standout moments came when Jawo and Hjelt broke into the tune "Girlfriend," urging all the girls in the crowd to join in the chorus of needing nothing but "me and my girlfriend." The Clemson gal pals all rose to the occasion, shouting into the mic and bouncing along.

"One of those nights you never want to go home...and I think tonight might be one of those nights," the pair sagely observed.

Things got even a little more playful with Hjelt noted before the song "When We Kiss" that Icona Pop is a band that "likes to make out" -- and asked the Clemson crowd if they like to make out. Well, who doesn't, right?

The ultimate party moment came at the end of the show, however, when the duo trotted out their biggest hit, "I Love It," which managed somehow to whip up the already excited crowd a notch higher than before. In fact, so much, that everyone crowded on stage to dance, take photos on their phones, sing along, hug ... and who wouldn't love that?

Spring break came a little early at Clemson, and we love it!
