  • Ode to the Pumpkin

Robert of the Radish at The Y! Music Playlist Blog6 mths ago

Our camera died this past weekend, so yesterday I took the kids out and bought a new one without much hesitation. You see, the camera is now something that I must own. It used to not be this way, but once you have kids you don't want to miss capturing moments that go by so quickly. Last night, while in the front yard, I noticed the pumpkins my wife put out on the front porch. They created a wonderful vignette with the moon and landscape lighting throwing shadows of curved ironwork on their orange forms. The image inspired me to get the tripod out and test my new camera with a long exposure time. The photo I captured can be seen in this blog.  After I took the photo the inspiration continued -- I started thinking about the pumpkin, long a symbol of the harvest and Halloween, and what the soundtrack could be. The 10 songs in this list represent the fruits of my efforts. I must say, this was a pretty challenging theme for a playlist, so please let me know what other "pumpkin songs" could be added.

  • Classic Monsters: A Halloween Playlist

Robert of the Radish at The Y! Music Playlist Blog6 mths ago

Today, the family and I went out searching for our Halloween costumes. Every store we walked into seemed to be doing a brisk business, which I hope is a good sign for the economy. My kids, like most, are really into Halloween. They love picking costumes, trick-or-treating, pumpkin carving, and lately they've started to show an interest in monsters. They're finally at an age where a scary movie (I'm talking something mild like Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein ) doesn't send them screaming in terror. Tonight we Neflixed a couple episodes of the Munsters, a show that I grew up with. My kids ate it up. This was the inspiration for this Halloween-themed playlist. I've chosen 14 songs, each one in honor of a classic monster. From Frankenstein, to Dracula, to the Mummy, to the Invisible Man, they're all here.

What's your favorite classic monster, and what songs would you add?

  • Songs About Werewolves

Robert of the Radish at The Y! Music Playlist Blog (NEW)6 mths ago

A werewolf is a tough Halloween costume to do well. You can easily end up looking like a large teddy bear if not done right. But with a little bit of effort, a werewolf costume can turn heads and be truly frightening.

The werewolf, or lycanthrope was born of European folklore, and it's quite a good metaphor for mankind's battle to overcome our primitive animal instincts. The werewolf is said to begin life as a normal person, but when the full moon rises they transform into a wolf-monster with a thirst for human blood. Lycanthropes rampage through the countryside taking victims. But when they awake the next morning covered in blood, they have no recollection of what took place.

    It's a terrifying prospect.

This Halloween many of you will transform into werewolves with the help of fur and spirit gum. This playlist should fit the bill as you complete your transition to beast. It includes 22 great werewolf inspired tracks.

  • Songs About Vampires

Robert of the Radish at The Y! Music Playlist Blog (NEW)6 mths ago

The beginnings of the vampire myth is impossible to pinpoint. The folklore of many cultures include some sort of demonic creature that feeds of the living, whether it be a victim's life energy or blood.

It was not until Bram Stoker's Dracula that the vampire began to take a form that would solidify into how we envision them today. Stoker modeled some of his Dracula character after the Romanian prince Vlad Tepes (1431-1476), better known as Vlad the Impaler. Vlad is regarded as a national hero in his homeland for defending against the Ottoman Turks. But in the western world, Vlad is seen as a monster due to his horrific practice of impaling live victims on wooden stakes outside his castle. One thing is certain however, Vlad was not a vampire, just one of the inspirations for Stoker's brilliant novel.

Vampires have continued to be big draws for booksellers and filmmakers, and on Halloween night you'll be hard-pressed to avoid seeing someone in a vampire costume.

This playlist includes 12 great songs about vampires.

  • Songs From Pitchfork’s Top Rated Albums

Robert of the Radish at The Y! Music Playlist Blog (NEW)6 mths ago

I've always had a love/hate relationship with Pitchfork media. On one hand, someone's critique of an album is an exercise in futility, but on the other hand, we love to debate it anyway.

There is simply no way to be objective about a piece of music, yet we like to pretend our personal opinion is the most valid. Pitchfork has taken the throne of music criticism, and so they are both loved and hated.

Some time ago, Spotify added a Pitchfork menu item in their application. When you click on it, it brings up a list of albums that you can listen to, along with the Pitchfork review and a rating from 1 to 10, with 10 being the best.

    Is Pitchfork for you?

Well, this playlist may help answer that question. It includes songs from albums that have received some of Pitchfork's highest ratings, 8 or higher.

  • Songs About Mummies

Robert of the Radish at The Y! Music Playlist Blog (NEW)6 mths ago

One great thing about Halloween is that people are free to become anything they want. But of all the costume choices available, I still love it when I see a well-done, classic monster. I'm talking about the big 7 -- Frankenstein, vampire, werewolf, witch, zombie, ghost, and mummy. Although these monsters have been the most popular for a long time, costumes range from lazy caricatures to the realistically scary .

Next to throwing a sheet over yourself and calling yourself a ghost, a mummy is one of the easiest costumes that can be done, all you need is a good supply of gauze and a friend willing to wrap you up. But if you choose to do a truly realistic mummy for Halloween, it can be one of the most make-up intensive, and creepiest costumes around. And oh, being a "sexy" mummy is probably the most stupid costume you can pick, so don't do it. If you're going to be a mummy, do it right!

This playlist includes a dozen songs about mummies, so if you're investing time putting on a mummy costume this year, this is the perfect soundtrack.

  • Band Family Tree Playlist: The Pernice Brothers

Robert of the Radish at The Y! Music Playlist Blog (NEW)6 mths ago

After the alt-country band Scud Mountain Boys dissolved in 1997, brothers Joe and Bob Pernice formed the Pernice Brothers, who would go on to record 7 critically acclaimed albums between 1998 and 2010.

The music had lost its country roots, but gained a lush, pop sound, and the formula found success among fans and critics alike. The band's average Metacritic score across multiple albums is an impressive 78 out of 100. Although not a household name for the average person, the Pernice Brothers hold a place of high esteem among music aficionados.

The individual members of the Pernice Brothers have been part of a fair number of excellent bands.

    This playlist explores them.
