Artists With The Most Billboard #1 Hot R&B Hits

The Y! Music Playlist Blog

Billboard magazine's Hot R&B Singles chart started back in 1942 when it was called the Black Singles chart. Today it's called the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. I'm not sure why they feel the need to lump R&B and Hip-Hop together, but then again, a lot of things Billboard does leaves me scratching my head. Like discontinuing the R&B chart altogether between 1963 and 1965 because they felt there was too much crossover with pop music. Thankfully, Billboard brought the R&B chart back and it's still going strong, even though it's shared with hip-hop -- as if hip-hop is a genre that doesn't deserve it's own singles chart?! For this playlist I wanted to look at the artists who have had the most songs reach the number one spot on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart.

The biggest surprise for me was that Janet beat her brother Michael.
