The Number One Songs of 2008

The Y! Music Playlist Blog

Starting this week I'll be publishing my top 100 album picks for 2008. I don't select the best albums of the year based on sales or popularity, but instead on what stood out for me personally. So before I get started on that, I wanted to recap the most popular songs of 2008.

The 14 songs in this playlist are the tracks that hit the number one spot on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2008. So these were truly the most popular recordings of the year as measured by sales and airplay.

The exact components that determine a songs position on the Hot 100 chart includes:

-Airplay: Billboard monitors about 1000 radio stations in the United States 24 hours a day 7 days a week

-Singles Sales: Billboard uses SoundScan reports on physical sales of the song

-Digital Sales: Also tracked by SoundScan, digital sales have been included in a song's sales total since 2003

If you're a mainstream music fan you'll be familiar with all of these songs, and it's a good recap of the year. However, if you shun MTV and mainstream radio, but instead discover new music via blogs and non-traditional sources, these songs may be completely foreign to you. This is your chance to see what the masses have been fawning over.
