The Planets Of Our Solar System: A Playlist

The Y! Music Playlist Blog

When I was a kid we were taught that there were nine planets in our solar system -- Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. It turns out that scientists did not know as much as they thought back then. Since that time astronomers have discovered many other orbiting objects, and in 2006, the International Astronomical Union redefined what constitutes a "planet". The new definition is as follows: "A celestial body that is (a) in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, and (c) has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit." This new definition threw Pluto out of the planet club and into "dwarf planet" status. To date, we have identified five dwarf planets, including Pluto.

This playlist includes a single track for each of the 8 planets and 5 dwarf planets in our solar system. What's your favorite "planet song"?
