"Sons of Anarchy," "Justified," "The Americans," "American Horror Story" … FX has a habit of making great TV dramas, and the network is about to launch another potential entry on that list with "The Bridge."

The series, which premieres on July 10, follows El Paso police detective Sonya Cross (Diane Kruger, "Inglourious Basterds") and Juarez, Mexico, homicide detective Marco Ruiz (Demian Bichir, "Weeds" and "A Better Life"), who are forced to work together to find a serial killer whose victims come from both sides of the border.

In this clip Kruger, Bichir, and director Gerardo Naranjo talk about the show's setting (the title refers to the Bridge of the Americas that connects Juarez and El Paso), dark subject matter, and characters. "[Sonya] and Marco have this really interesting relationship going on," says Kruger. "You couldn't find two human beings so different," Bichir adds.

Ruiz is not strict about following procedures, Cross is a stickler for the rules, and there's also the matter of her Asperger's syndrome, which makes it difficult for her to feel empathy for victims and means she has to be reminded that it's inappropriate to change her clothes in the middle of the squad room.

Naranjo describes the setting as almost like another cast member, saying there's an excitement, an "extra element of life" there, but also pointing out its dangerous aspects.

"'The Bridge' is about secrets," he says. "It's about what happens in the night … a story of lights that illuminate dark places and, at times, those lights turn off."

"The Bridge" premieres July 10 at 10 PM on FX.
